Institutions specialized in prisoners’ affairs reported, on Monday, that the number of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli occupation prisons reached more than 9,600 prisoners until the beginning of April 2026, based on official data issued by Israel Prison Service.

This came in a joint statement by the Palestinian Prisoner Society (PPS) and the Addameer Association (non-governmental), and the Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs of the Palestine Liberation Organization.

The statement mentioned that the number of Palestinian prisoners reached “more than 9,600 prisoners, including 84 women and about 350 children, held in Megiddo and Ofer prisons.”

The number of administrative detainees (without charge) also reached about 3,532 people, which is the highest percentage compared to the categories of sentenced and detained prisoners, in addition to those classified within what is called “unlawful combatants.”

In this context, the number of detainees classified under this category reached 1,251 detainees, noting that this figure does not include all Gaza Strip detainees held in camps belonging to the Israeli army.

The data indicates that this classification also includes Arab detainees from Lebanon and Syria (without specifying their number), amid human rights warnings of the consequences of the expansion of its use. The statement did not mention the classification of the rest of the detainees, who are usually not classified under “administrative detention.”

Since October 2023, and in conjunction with the genocide in Gaza, Israel has escalated its violations against Palestinian prisoners who suffer torture, starvation, and medical negligence, which led to the martyrdom of dozens of them, according to Palestinian and Israeli human rights organizations.
