Shawa: Gaza’s health and environmental crisis deepens daily

Amjad al‑Shawa, head of the Palestinian NGOs Network in Gaza, has warned that the Gaza Strip is facing an escalating health and environmental crisis, intensifying daily amid the ongoing war and its repercussions on all aspects of life.

In recent remarks to Al‑Araby Al‑Jadeed, Shawa talked about the worsening problems of waste, rubble, and sewage, compounded by rising temperatures, and the grave risks they pose to residents, especially those in displacement camps.

“These combined factors create fertile ground for the spread of rodents, mosquitoes, and flies,” Shawa said.

“What is happening in Gaza cannot be considered a mere footnote in the humanitarian crisis, but a core element of the complex catastrophe the Strip has endured for months. The crisis is no longer limited to bombardment, destruction, and casualties, but has extended into the details of daily life, from health and water to the general environment,” Shawa underlined.

He held the Israeli occupation regime fully responsible for the large-scale deterioration of the humanitarian and health conditions in Gaza.

“The destruction of infrastructure and the prevention of essential supplies and materials needed for humanitarian, health, and environmental responses have reduced the capacity of local institutions, municipalities, and humanitarian actors to cope with such dire conditions,” he said.
