Pope Leo said on Tuesday that the war on Iran is “unjust,” warning that targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure constitutes a violation of international law.
Speaking to the media amid escalating regional tensions, the Pope stressed that threatening an entire population is unacceptable, calling for greater respect for human rights and an immediate halt to hostilities.
He reiterated a broader appeal he made days earlier during his Easter message in St. Peter’s Square, urging world leaders to end ongoing conflicts and abandon policies of domination and invasion.
The Pope expressed concern over what he described as a growing normalization of violence, warning against increasing global indifference and emphasizing the need to protect civilians.
“Let those who have weapons lay down their arms, and let those who have the power to ignite wars choose peace,” he said.
He also addressed US president Donald Trump directly, urging him to find a way to end the war in Iran as tensions continue to rise across the Middle East.
