The Israeli police authorities forced a Jerusalemite resident to demolish his own home in the town of Jabal al-Mukabber, southeast of occupied Jerusalem, on Sunday.
The Jerusalem Governorate affirmed that resident Ali Sawahreh and his son Mohammad were compelled to carry out the demolition themselves to avoid heavy fines and the high costs of forced demolition.
This comes amid a noticeable increase in self-demolitions in Occupied Jerusalem in recent days, as Israeli authorities tighten their measures, intensify demolition orders, and impose steep fines on Jerusalemite families.
According to official data from the Jerusalem Governorate, Jerusalemite residents have been forced to carry out nine self-demolitions since the beginning of April.
In the same context, the Israeli authorities demolished 234 homes and structures in the West Bank and Occupied Jerusalem during March, including 23 homes that were completely destroyed.
“Self-demolition” is a coercive measure that forces homeowners to carry out demolition orders themselves to avoid the execution costs imposed by the Israeli municipality and to prevent the accumulation of fines or damage to neighboring homes.
Jerusalemite families often resort to this option after exhausting legal avenues as a way to minimize losses, despite the severe humanitarian and psychological impact it causes.
