Jerusalemite resident forced to self-demolish his family home in Silwan

The Israeli authorities forced a Jerusalemite resident on Thursday to self-demolish his own home in the town of Silwan in Occupied Jerusalem.

The Jerusalem Governorate reported that resident Omar Abdul Majeed Abu Rajab was compelled to carry out the demolition himself in the Al-Bustan neighborhood, south of Aqsa Mosque.

The governorate explained that the house was built in 2016 and measured 45 square meters. However, the Israeli municipal authorities ordered its demolition.

Over the past month, the Israeli authorities demolished 234 homes and structures in the West Bank and Occupied Jerusalem, including 23 homes that were completely destroyed.

The “self-demolition” policy forces homeowners to carry out demolition orders themselves to avoid heavy fines imposed by the Israeli municipality, as well as to prevent additional penalties and potential damage to neighboring homes.

Jerusalemite families often resort to this option after exhausting legal avenues, in an attempt to reduce losses despite the severe humanitarian and psychological impact it entails.
