Jordan’s top diplomat Ayman Safadi assured Friday his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir-Abdollahian in a phone conversation that his country’s airspace will not be used by “Israel” in the context of the ongoing war on Gaza.
Safadi underlined that “Today, the region needs peace more than ever, while the Israeli regime seeks to deflect people’s attention from the main issue of Gaza through the path of psychological warfare.”
“Jordan is resolved not to allow Israel to abuse its airspace during the developments in Gaza,” he told Amir-Abdollahian.
The phone call comes shortly after Amir-Abdollahian and Safadi met on the sidelines of the United Nations Security Council, where the Iranian Foreign Minister had an address.
The two top diplomats spoke about the potential of escalation in the region and efforts to halt the war on Gaza, Jordan News Agency Petra reported.
Safadi told his Iranian counterpart that Jordan will not allow regional powers to turn its territory into a combat zone, affirming that his country seeks strong relations with Iran.
It is worth noting that Amman reportedly opened its airspace to the Israeli Air Force and participated in attempts to down Iran’s drones and missiles against Israeli targets on April 13. Back then, Safadi justified his country’s actions as necessary to “ensure” the well-being of its citizens.
On his part, Amir-Abdollahian said that Iran does express respect toward Jordan, however, he emphasized the context of the Iranian retaliatory attack on Israeli military sites. He explained that the Iranian response came after “Israel” attacked the country’s consulate in Syria, adding that the retaliatory attack was legitimate and came after sufficient warnings.
Elsewhere, the two ministers reiterated the necessity to stop the Israeli war on Gaza.
