AMO reports shootings, disease outbreak at Israel’s Ganot prison

RAMALLAH, (PIC)

The Asra Media Office (AMO) said on Wednesday that detainees at Israel’s Ganot prison are facing extremely harsh conditions amid continued repression, starvation, medical neglect and the spread of disease and fungal infections inside prison sections.

In a statement, the Office said prison authorities carried out a raid two days earlier using pepper spray and live fire, while also assaulting detainees during outdoor breaks and canceling them at times.

It said the food provided to prisoners is poor in quality and insufficient, leaving several detainees suffering from severe weight loss, lack of clothing and shortages of blankets.

AMO also reported the spread of scabies and fungal infections, amid discussions about a possible closure of the prison because of the disease outbreak.

Several prisoners have seen their health deteriorate due to malnutrition and medical neglect, the Office said, warning that detention conditions remain abusive and life-threatening.

AMO called on international human rights and humanitarian organizations to intervene urgently to stop the escalating violations, provide prisoners with needed medical care and pressure Israel to end its policy of repression, starvation and deliberate neglect in its prisons.
