The Hamas Movement has called for an escalation of public mobilization and solidarity actions in support of Palestinian prisoners held by Israel, urging broader international engagement ahead of Palestinian Prisoners’ Day on 17 April.
In a statement issued Tuesday, the Islamic Resistance Movement, Hamas, praised grassroots protests and solidarity activities that have taken place in support of prisoners’ legitimate rights, as well as in condemnation of daily violations and abuses committed against them by the Israeli occupation authorities.
The Movement highlighted what it called the latest escalation in these measures, referring to the approval of a controversial law permitting the execution of prisoners, which it described as “criminal.”
Hamas urged Palestinians, the wider Arab and Muslim worlds, and institutions supporting prisoners globally to intensify and expand all forms of public mobilization and solidarity efforts.
It called for Palestinian Prisoners’ Day on 17 April to serve as both a national and International Day of Action, aimed at raising awareness, exposing the crimes of the “fascist (Israeli) occupation government,” and applying pressure through all possible means to overturn the execution law.
According to the statement, Israeli occupation forces are currently holding more than 9,000 Palestinian detainees in their prisons, where they are subjected to what Hamas described as unprecedented levels of harsh treatment and abuse.
